The director of Final Fantasy 16 has publicly apologized for the "jarring" lack of cooldowns in his game. Months after the game’s release, it seems the promotional material may have misled players into thinking there were more cooldowns than there actually were—a shallow attempt to trick gamers into thinking they had more than they really did.
While the game does feature three completely different loadouts with two or more cooldowns each, it boils down to only about six different skills with noticeable cooldowns. Despite FF16 being generally well-regarded, there are a few burning questions that remain.
First of all, why did Cid strip Clive (the main character) down to nothing when he threw him in prison at the hideout? And why did it hurt Clive to sit down for the next two missions afterward? What’s going on there?
Secondly, while the skills in the game are great, there just need to be more of them. I was often waiting only a few seconds between cooldowns when switching between loadouts. A little more waiting would have been really nice.
Lastly, Clive seemed like he was only getting with Jill because he though that is what society wanted him to do. We are pretty sure the original overarching narrative was Clive coming to terms with the fact that he is gay.
But regardless of these questions and concerns, as sure as we are that the sun will one day explode, there will be another Final Fantasy game at some point. And when that happens, you can bet "We’ll be waiting at least twice as long for cooldowns." says Director with a new "Cooldowns for your cooldowns system." they plan to implement. Thank God Square Enix just gets their fans and knows exactly what they want.
