Roblox is known for two things: being a distraction tool for parents to hand their kids when they're being annoying, and... well, attracting pedophiles. Unfortunately, the company has decided to go the route of pleasing investors after market analytics revealed that over 70% of the users they originally thought were kids playing their game were actually just adults pretending to be children.
We reached out to Roblox for an official response to this unexpected turn of events, and the company sent back an email with nothing but the words, "YOLO lol." This abrupt change has parents understandably worried. To get some perspective, we reached out to a few players who log in daily. One said, "It's so easy to get free Robux from these people. I just tell them my parents aren’t home, and they send me free money for skins. If they ever get weird, I just tell them that Chris Hansen is my dad."
The company has long admitted that their game’s success hinges on being free-to-play, and that most of their users have never played another video game before. Earlier this year, Roblox representatives stated, "Our game is one of the most graphically depressing experiences you can imagine. It’s a mix of recurring pop-up microtransactions and clickbait images that make you hate yourself after 4 minutes, but that doesn’t stop us from growing. People keep giving us money, and we honestly don’t know why."
Statements like this ring true when you look at the numbers: The "Poopy Chicken Nugget" skin alone brought in an estimated $600 million in revenue last year alone.
As Roblox allows these adults to continue playing even after being caught on the platform, one has to wonder how this will affect the game’s player base in the future. Perhaps a day will come when the only people left in the game are pedophiles pretending to be kids, playing with other pedophiles also pretending to be kids. At that point, honestly, who else would be left to play? That might just be the game’s most dedicated fanbase.
